My Christmas journey into Wales
1988 AD

From checking my old pictures it seems the first time I visited Lake Vyrnwy for Christmas was in 1988 with my mum.

Our car at that time

Lake Vyrnwy as ever

Top of Bwylch y Groes looking down towards Dinas Mawddy
(compare this with the same spot in 2001)

Toward Ffestiniog

Same scene 17 years apart

As I was in 88 (no grey hair)

And mum as she was then, this is an important photo as she is standing, she had been using a wheelchair for several years by then and wanted a picture of herself standing while she was still capable of it

Other Years

The year before in 1987 we went to the Long Mynd for Christmas, and took the 4WD electric wheelchair

1986 was the first year we went out on Christmas day, in my first car, This was taken that day after a bit of off roading on Cleeve Common, near Cheltenham.

The original reason for going out and taking a picnic on Christmas day was because the previous year I was unable to cook a satisfactory Christmas Dinner for mum who was no longer capable of cooking for herself. It was easier to make up a packed lunch and we enjoyed getting away from the boredom.

By 1994 we had a Limo

1998 was the second Christmas after mum had passed on. I did not take many photographs as I had originally planned to commit suicide by the lakeside, it was only the presence of my brother, who phoned late on Christmas Eve that changed my mind. This picture of the slate waste at Ffestiniog sums up my mood of desolation that year
